NH 44 begins at Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu and terminates at Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar. Owing to this fact, it is often referred to as the spine of India by several individuals.

This highway was previously referred to as the NH 7 but later with the re-numbering system of national highways it was renamed NH 44.

NH44: The longest highway in India (about 3,745 -4,112 km) links Srinagar to Kanyakumari, and includes the previous NH 7.

NH7: A large portion of the existing NH 44, between Varanasi (UP) and Kanyakumari (TN) is renumbered.

These few experiences are what leave the journey memorable.
